Tennis/Golf trophy (5th June)

Tennis is top hole.

On Saturday 5th July, Ely Tennis Club took the trophy at what is now set to be a popular annual event.

This is the third year that the neighbouring sporting clubs, Ely Tennis Club (part of the Ely Outdoor Sports Association) and On Par Golf Club, have battled out a handicapped golf/ tennis challenge.

Golf is played according to Texas scramble rules, the golf payers also giving the tennis an additional shot per hole, and the tennis is played as short sets with the golf players having a generous handicap. The finale was an interesting chipping and putting challenge which the tennis club won handsomely giving them the trophy once more.

Participants were of all ages and it was particularly good to see the keen competitiveness of the youngsters.

Play finished with Pimms and a BBQ on what had been a gloriously sunny and fun day.

Chairman's shield (16th May)

Ely Tennis Club chairman Susan Didlick retained the annual 'Chairmans shield' mixed doubles competition this year with a new partner, the club coach Sebastien Scaux.. They won all four of their matches.

2009

ATP World Tour Final - O2 Arena

The Barclays ATP World Tour Finals is the year-end climax to the men’s professional tennis season, featuring only the world’s best eight qualified singles players and doubles teams. This spectacular season-ending tournament determines the official year-end South African Airways 2009 ATP Rankings and will also crown the official 2009 ATP World Tour Champion. Played using a round-robin format, the  top eight  ATP World Tour stars all play three matches as they battle for a berth in the knockout semi-finals, ensuring every match showcases tennis akin to the quality of at least a Grand Slam quarter-final. The prestigious tournament has been contested in major cities around the world. This year sees the tournament to be held in the heart of London at The O2 arena from 2009 to 2013.
On the 22nd of November the first day of the world tour Final took place between Federer and Verdasco who battled for 3 sets with some great tennis even if on that particular day the GREAT Federer did not play at his best. It was nevertheless fantastic to watch those two great athletes.

                                                                                                 Roger Federer #1

Fernando Verdasco #8
